Today, we know a lot more about COVID-19. For example, masks effectively mitigate the spread of the airborne droplets that carry SARS-CoV-2. However, first responders didn’t have the luxury of this knowledge when they mounted their pandemic response back in March 2020. As local and state governments issued shelter-in-place orders to their citizens, first responders and other frontline workers charged forward, navigating new risks, new protocols, and scientific uncertainty.
